Growing up in a family which my mom is a teacher and also having some relatives being teachers, I was immersed in that teaching atmosphere since I was little, sometimes sneaking into the classroom while my mom was teaching. Among all the careers, teacher is the job I have been around the most as a recipient of education. Therefore, my interest in teaching didn’t suddenly occur, it has built up little by little. Recently, my craving of being a teacher makes me feel a bit overwhelming.
After enrolling the international stream in senior high school, the education system is kind of different from the conventional Chinese education system, which every students have their own tutor. I feel very lucky and delightful to have a tutor who cares about every aspect of my life. When we have private tutorial sessions during independent study times, she would breakdown a sentence which I don’t understand into pieces to make sure that I would be able to fully comprehend and maybe try to use the same sentence structure into my writings. Besides the assistance in the academic terms, she would tell me some overarching principles that are important in life. One word that changed me significantly is that she told me all the embarrassment and unhappiness would be blown away in the second day and no one would remember those things, so just live with more ease. Here I find that teacher is not just a job, it inspires and shapes the future. I have gained so much from my tutor and I realized how sacred teachers are.
As a monitor of the class, my classmates often ask me to go over the questions with them. In the process, I find my tutor’s shadow being in me. When they asked me for help, I would put down the things that I was doing and explain the process patiently to them. Every time, I try to tell them something else that highly relates to the problem so that they could apply the knowledge in a more flexible way next time. I truly found myself suitable of teaching, feeling that teaching is such a beatific moment. I also got positive comments from my classmates, “You have the qualities of a great teacher.”
In our College Navigation course, our teacher asked us to take the MBTI test to better know what careers might suit you. Surprisingly, it shows that ENFJ is suitable for teachers. Well, not only people who are teaching in schools are teachers, there are teachers spanning different domains, such as senior staff members guiding new employees. I hope that through my current studies, I would be able to guide and inspire others in the future, just like how my tutor is guiding me now...
